Why Garden Organically?

1. With organic gardening, fewer pesticides and chemical fertilizers are released into the environment, and humans are not exposed to potentially toxic chemicals.

2. Organic gardens reduce chemical runoff. Two tools in traditional are pesticides and chemical fertilizers. When you spray pesticides, the food you spray them on absorb some and you can ingest those chemicals when you eat the food. Some of the pesticides also go into the soil, where they can kill the soil microbes that form the basis of your garden ecosystem. Then you have chemical fertilizers, which do nothing for the soil texture and do little to build the long term nutrient capacity of the soil. These fertilizers give plants a quick boost and then wash off the top of the soil.

The Best Herbs to Grow in Your Garden

Fresh herbs makes recipes taste even better and are great to have around for soups, stews, and salads. When picking a place to grow your herb, keep in mind that they need a good 4 to 6 hours of sun daily.

Parsley: This is a mild bitter herb that can enhance the flavor of your food. Many consider parsley to be just a garnish for food but it can actually help things like stews achieve a more balanced flavor. It can also aid in digestion. It is often grown as an annual, but in a milder climate, it will stay evergreen all winter long. Parsley plants will grow to be large and bushy, and it is a good source of vitamins A and C.

Mint: There are several varieties of mint. You can use it in drinks like mojitos or mint juleps. Mint freshens your breath and will help calm your stomach. If you grow mint, remember that it is considered an invasive plant, it will spread and take over your garden. It is best grown in containers.

Some of the Biggest Landscaping Mistakes

Neglecting Cub Appeal

Never underestimate the power of curb appeal. Many homeowners put all of their energy into the backyard, but the front of the house is where first impressions are made.

Not Accounting for Wildlife

You could be planting a buffet rather than a garden if you do not consider what animals or garden pests might be around. For example, pretty flowering plants attract deer, so you might want to throw in some bitter tasting ones among them. Once they taste the wrong one, they are less likely to come back.

Keep Three Things in Mind

There are three simple improvements you can make that will make a big difference out front. Paint your door a contrasting color to what is around it, keep the grass trimmed and green, and plant colorful flowers.
