Different Types of Grass

Last post we discussed warm weather grasses and cool weather grasses. Here are a list of the different types of grasses in these categories.

Warm weather grasses:

Bermuda - Bermuda grass is cold tolerant-warm season grass. It will remain green all year long. It does well in full sun but will tolerate some shade.

Centipede - This is a popular grass for lawns in the southern part of the United States. It’s ability to grow in nutrient poor soil and it’s low maintenance is ideal for most homeowners in warmer.

Zoysia - This is a hearty, drought resistant grass that requires little or no maintenance. It is thick, hearty grass that chokes out weeds and requires less mowing.

St. Augustine - St. Augustine is a medium to high maintenance grass that forms a thick carpet-like sod, Which also crowds out most weeds. It is somewhat last drought tolerant.

Cool weather grasses:

Kentucky Bluegrass - This is one of the more beautiful cool season lawn grasses. It is known for its excellent color, density, and texture.

Rye Grass - Rye grass is valued for it’s fast germination rate and quick establishment. Heat and drought tolerance tolerance varies by variety. It can withstand light shade.

Fescues - this is suitable for Northern and transitional zones. It is heat, drought, and shade tolerant, and it is disease resistant as well.
