There are many good reasons to sow seeds in the fall!
Low cost, no transplant shock and no seed refrigeration (nature does it for you). First you need to prepare the garden bed, by working plentyof organic matter into the soil. The soil should be loose, crumbly and moist before planting and then raked smooth.Next, plant the seeds following planting suggestions for depth on seed packaging. And, finally, cover the beds (lightly) with mulch, and keep moist. Be careful not to wash away your new seeds with too high of a hose setting!
You’re finished, it’s that easy!
In Illinois we are in zone 5 for planting, so here are some
good suggestions for your beds:
Columbine
Coneflower
Penstemon
Pink Dianthus
Primrose
Rudbeckia
Shasta Daisy
Blanket Flower
