What to plant in the Fall
Didn’t have enough time this spring to plant everything you wanted? Well here’s some great news!
There are a lot of plants that can be planted in the fall, so that next spring your garden will be a breeze.
Planting in the fall is perfect for your plants. Cool temperatures so the plants don’t scorch, but warmer
ground so the roots have a good chance to grow is the perfect mixture for beautiful gardens.
1. Hardy Bulbs need to be planted in the fall because they need a period of cold to bloom. There
are many to choose from. Put in several varieties so you can enjoy color all spring.
2. Pansies are a wonderful little flower. When planted in early fall you can still enjoy them this
year and have come back up for Spring. Use mulch to keep them warm in the winter.
3. Peonies are a beautiful flower to see in the spring. It is good to plant them in early fall so their
roots have some time to grow. Tip: avoid planting too deep, no more than 2 inches above the
bud on the root or they will not bloom.
4. Hostas are a nice contribution to any garden. They work well in the shade and with so many
varieties they can bloom from June to October. If you already have a lot and want to split them,

Mulching can be done any time of the year.
1. Remove any existing weeds
2. Edge the bed to keep mulch in and grass out.
3. Add a weed mat if you want even more protection
4. Install 3-4’’ for new mulch and 1-2’’ if you are touching up existing mulch
